God Never Said That | God Wants Me to be Happy

by Jason Hardy on May 01, 2022

Life Group Study Guide: Loved what you heard on Sunday? Want to go deeper? The life group study guide will help you unpack what you heard on Sunday, while diving deeper into God's word.

  • What are some current blessings in your life that you are thankful for?

Dig Deeper:

Read Mathew 5:1-16

  • What stands out to you from this passage of scripture? Give the Holy Spirit a moment to lead you to specific thoughts, words, or phrases. What insight, questions, or observations do you have? Write them down, and try to answer them as a group.
  • What does it mean to be blessed? How would you define it?

  • Is there a difference between blessedness and happiness?
  • Who does Jesus say will experience God’s blessedness? How does this contrast with who our world blesses?

  • How do verses 1-12 relate to verses 13-16?

Making it Personal:

  • If a young believer asked you, “doesn’t God just want us to be happy?” how would you respond?
  • When was a time you pursued something you thought would make you happy, but ended up disappointed?
  • On Sunday, Pastor Jason explored the dangers of the theology of happiness. Review the sermon notes. How have you seen a theology of happiness in your own spiritual development?

  • When was a moment in your life when you were not happy, but God’s presence brought joy and the reality of His blessings?
  • Happiness and Holiness are not on two opposite spectrums, but rather closely connected. How have you seen the pursuit of Holiness impact your joy? How has your pursuit of God changed what you find joy in?
  • How has God’s word encouraged you personally, through this study, or Sunday’s sermon?
